Troubles Melt Like Lemon Drops at Graceville Arts Festival June 2022

In June, Caloundra House residents designed an art piece for the Create Together, Belong Together exhibition at Graceville Arts Festival hosted by Lutheran Services. The exhibition aims to celebrate diversity and inclusion through the joy of creating and sharing art. Through this experience our residents were able to create something special with the support of our Supported Care and Caloundra House staff.

The residents’ project was led by Supported Care support worker Elana who is an Artist by trade, taking inspiration from artist Carley Cornelissen. Elana was able to plan a piece that encouraged the involvement for residents of all abilities. She told us that this piece is a “celebration of the joy that a rainbow in the sky brings to one”, after recognizing the significance of colourful images of rainbows appearing around the world since the beginning of lockdowns. So, what better song lyrics to inspire this piece than ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ from ‘The Wizard of Oz’?

The residents have named the piece after a poignant line in the song “troubles melt like lemon drops”, as the hope and solidarity of the rainbow promise better times to come.

To create this piece residents used mixed media which included printouts of birds, flowers, frogs, butterflies, tissue paper, serviettes, stencils, acrylic paints, wax crayons, and dictionary paper. This piece is a celebration of inclusion and diversity, getting many of our residents involved in its creation. Unfortunately, we were not able to visit the exhibition during its run but nevertheless enjoyed the process from conception to presentation. Please enjoy some images of the residents getting involved!

Thank you to Graceville Arts Festival and Lutheran Services for hosting a wonderful event that showcases the joy in creating and sharing art with the community. A video from the opening of the event can be seen below!
